In the world of metrology (the science of measurement), precision is everything. Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and master plug gauges must be accurate to the micron level. This level of precision requires materials that simply do not change shape.
Dimensional Stability and Thermal Expansion
One of the biggest enemies of precision measurement is temperature fluctuation. Tungsten carbide has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion—about half that of steel. This means that a tungsten carbide gauge ball will maintain its exact dimensions even if the laboratory temperature fluctuates.
Wear Resistance for Repeated Use
Master gauge balls and CMM styli tips are repeatedly brought into contact with other hard metals. A ruby tip is common, but for extremely abrasive surfaces or where maximum toughness is required without fracturing, a Tungsten Carbide tip is preferred. It resists wear, ensuring that the measurement instrument remains perfectly calibrated over thousands of uses.
