You've just received a bulk shipment of premium EN-31 high-carbon bearing steel balls from Rama & Sons. They arrive in pristine condition, manufactured to micron-level tolerances. But if stored improperly, high-carbon steel will begin to rust in a matter of days, destroying their precision.
The Enemy: Moisture and Oxygen
Rust (Iron Oxide) forms when iron, oxygen, and water react. The goal of storage is to eliminate the water/moisture component entirely.
Best Practices for Steel Ball Storage:
- Never Store Bare: Carbon steel balls should never be exposed to bare air. They must remain coated in a high-quality rust-preventative oil (VCI oil) or grease at all times.
- Keep Original Packaging Intact: We ship our steel balls in VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) paper and sealed plastic bags. Do not open these bags until you are ready to use the balls on the assembly line.
- Climate Control: Store inventory in a dry, temperature-controlled warehouse. Large temperature swings cause condensation, pulling moisture directly onto the metal surfaces.
- Handling: Never touch precision carbon steel balls with bare hands. The natural acids, salts, and moisture in human sweat will immediately etch and rust the steel. Always use clean, lint-free gloves.
- First-In, First-Out (FIFO): Rotate your inventory. Even with perfect packaging, rust preventatives degrade over long periods (years). Use older stock first.
By following these simple storage protocols, you ensure your steel balls remain perfectly spherical, smooth, and ready for high-performance applications.
